Empire State South | Atlanta, Georgia USA

Coffee. Black.

Roasted Padron Peppers

Pimento Cheese w/ bacon marmalade

Pork Belly; Anson mills grits, sorghum, coddled egg, pears, peanuts.

Steak & Egg; Anson mill oats, maitake mushrooms, kale, ESS hot sauce, sunny egg

Scrapple; Crisp sourdough, fried egg, pickled mustard seed, apple butter, radish and herb salad

While reading Chef Acheson’s blog on the finale of Bravo’s Top Chef Masters Season 4 (congrats btw to Chris Cosentino!), he made a mention of how there is a dish that is similar to the beef tartar dish Chris served. I’ve always wanted to check out ESS and figured this past weekend was the opportunity to do so. After a few back/forth tweets between myself and both Chef Acheson/Chef Smith, knew exactly what to order for the group! Chef Ryan Smith mentioned Steak and Eggs with the oats and hot sauce; while Chef Hugh Acheson just said anything with pork and coffee. Also during some researching around the net, saw that the Pimento Cheese with bacon marmalade was a must have. Just reading it made me salavate.

Favorite dishes: Steak and Eggs with the oats and hot sauce; also, the Pimento cheese w/ bacon marmalade (it was better than the name sounds, which is pretty freaking awesome!!).

Lumiere | Newton, Massachusetts USA

Amuse Bouche; Soldier bean hummus on a slice of cucumber. black and white sesame seeds and little scallions.

Verrill Farm Corn Soup; Roasted Tomatillo and Corn Salsa, Lime Crema

Seared Barnegat Light Sea Scallops; Succotash Salad & Maple-Mustard Vinaigrette

Miso-Mustard Glazed Chatham Bluefish; shiitake mushrooms, zucchini, and eggplant, sweet & spicy soy-sesame vinaigrette

Sophia’s Greek Yogurt Panna Cotta; Local Berry Compote, Lemon Shortbread Crumble

For what would have been Julia Child’s 100th birthday, I searched the state of Massachusetts for a restaurant that would have a menu that reflects her teachings. One of the eateries near me happened to have a special menu and so I went to check it out. Really enjoyed the soup as it was creamy but not too much where the corn flavor was masked. Also liked the scallops, which was actually ordered off their regular menu, I just did some research and found that this was a not-to-miss type of item.

Parking
Is kind of tough. The site specifies street parking, but there isn’t much. About a block down near the police station was a metered parking lot that I found a spot at. Good luck. No valet.

Pho Binh Bellaire | Houston, Texas USA

Ho brothers eating

Pho Ga Kho; chicken pho with a very flavorful chicken broth on side

One of the best Pho at a restaurant I’ve had to date. When my good friends Bang and Kiem Ho said this place has some great Pho, they weren’t kidding. I went with the unique recommendation of the ph? gà khô which translates to ‘dry chicken noodle soup’. Unique because the soup, first of all, is of a chicken broth as opposed to the typical beef broth. Secondly, the noodles are served dry (without the soup), allowing you to pour the chicken broth as needed. Finally, they dress the top of the noodles with pieces of chicken, egg, and fried shallots and assorted herbs.

A lovely meal with good friends!

Canelé | Los Angeles, CA USA

Canelé’s sign greeting you as you enter.

Assorted table side items.

Dining area

Gazpacho with soft cooked egg, toast and anchoiade

Pancetta pasta spaghetti with pancetta, pistachio, parmesan and

Bistro steak with sauce bordelaise, pommes anna and creamed spinach

Honestly, we were originally trying to go to Tacos Villa Corona, but… they’re closed on Saturdays. Ended up making a last minute search of what was good/nearby and found Canelé. Ended up being quite pleased with the food! I think because of the hot weather, the bistro steak might not have been the best choice, but still tasty. Will definitely make a trip back to try some of their other offerings.

The Optimist | Atlanta, GA USA

When you first walk in, you’re greeted by the Oyster Bar; first come first serve with a varied menu than what you can get in the main dining area.

Inside of The Optimist, main dinning area.

Shot of the bar area

Hot out of the oven bread with sprinkles of sea salt on top

Peel & eat ga white shrimp, “come back” sauce & lemon

Duck fat poached swordfish, pickled sweet peppers, crispy pancetta

Maine sea scallops, oxtail marmalade, brown butter-chicken jus

Pan seared red snapper

Grilled rack of lamb, field peas, preserved lemon, lamb jus

One of the newest restaurants in Atlanta that serves sustainable seafood. They seem to change parts of their menu; when I tried looking at the menu from The Optimist’s website, they no longer had the grilled rack of lamb nor the version of the red snapper. But I hope they never change the Maine sea scallops served with an oxtail marmalade because that dish is AMAZING! Go get that if nothing else. mmm….so good.

Also their website is pretty awesome. The main page has audio of the waves cascading against the shore. Looping infinitely. I think I’ll just leave that on while I work from now on…
