The next day, we woke up SUPER early to be some of the first ones in the shop. From what my relatives tell me, this place will start selling around 6/6:30am and will sell out, typically by 9/10am. The food was definitely worth it though. Top notch! The apom manis is probably one of the stars at this eatery as they use a cooking method that is quite rare. Through using specialty ordered earthen clay pot and some super hot charcoal, they pour a batter into the pot and place another pot on top. After 30 seconds or so, he opens the pot and flips the partially cooked apom manis and allows it to finish, then serves. It’s a very delicate food; probably cousin to the crepes in France. A pretty awesome hot tip from VKeong is you can call ahead for the Apom Manis from a Mr.Ravi at 012-4707039. The Har Mee was also very tasty; you can definitely tell they did not skimp while making the prawn broth.

After relaxing a bit at the hotel, we were finally ready to take on the next stop of our food adventure. I remember coming to Red Garden many years ago and I’m happy to note, it’s just as good as before. We started inspecting each stall as soon as we walked in, determining what we should order. I believe as they’ve done this so many times before, they all knew what should/should not be ordered. Being in a food inspecting trance, we really didn’t talk with each other much. Amazing that we somehow had no duplicate orders! As we all sat down, we probably waited no more than 5-10 minutes before the food started coming one after another (my inner fat kid was so happy).
The skate wing had a proper sear, was well seasoned, and quite fresh; cooking on top of the banana added another dimension of flavor as it gave the fish a wonderful aromatic sweet flavor. Another dish that stood out was the frog leg congee as it was relatively sweet from the fresh frog legs; the congee itself was nicely cooked, being rather smooth and silky in texture. Finally, the best one was the oyster omelette! Great flavor from the well-seasoned chili-sauced oysters; the 1 to 1 proportion of egg to oyster was a bonus. Ugh, salivating just thinking about it. The only dish I would say could have been better was the satay. In some eateries in Ipoh, you’ll see hawkers cook with skewers of meat shallowly above the coal grill. They would constantly fan the fire, preventing the meat from burning. This created an awesome crust/sear, with the little bits of coal-charred meat adding wonderful aromatics. Was not the case here unfortunately, but that is still not to say it wasn’t tasty.
The meal was insane.

I wish there were names for these street vendors, but they are as street as they come. One even had just a push cart and a few things of cardboard for a roof (which honestly, did the job). But we came out of Kedai Kopi Ho Ping and not even 10 minutes went by, we were already walking towards the above dishes.

As we arrived at Penang, we basically dropped our luggage at the hotel and then hit the ground running. First stop, we went to this place relatively near our hotel (10 minute walk). Kedai Kopi Ho Ping is a small little eatery with multiple vendors outside cooking/waiting for your order.Favorite dish of the series was the Penang asam laksa; a dish packed with flavor. A base of mackerel soup, has a bit of sour from the tamarind, onion to add some sweetness, chili to add some spicy, and finish that off with fish flakes and the sweet prawn paste to really bold the flavors. This bowl of asam laksa has it all.

If I had to choose just one place to consider my favorite food spot in the world, this would be it. The eats at the food court is astounding. Sure, you may not have the same variety as you would in a more modernized eatery, but as the old adage goes, quality over quantity. The best thing, I think, that can be ordered at the food court is the ‘see hum chow fun’, It simply cannot be beat anywhere else. Various textures and flavors from the Ingredients that an uncle has painstakingly cooked on a flat wok until he deems the dish is ready. Should you still want more, there are street food vendors that are a skip, hop, and step away. Not only would I choose this food court for the great eats, but there is also an emotional attachment as my most fondest memories of family are here. It’s a place where I consider time to stand still and hope to make many trips back in the coming years.

These are the moments I’ve been waiting for! Simply incredible food cooked by these street vendors. A reminder that a fancy kitchen, great decor, and posh looking food is not what makes for a great meal. Humbling to see these hard-working and talented individuals serving such amazing food!
